The word of God brings light, the Psalmist says. What does light do? It helps us to see clearly. When we see clearly we are able to discern better what is good and what is bad, what is healthy and what is harmful. Before reading on, take a moment and watch this 1 minute clip from what I thought was a very good film at the time
Perhaps a silly and imperfect example, but the point is, had John Anderton (Tom Cruise) been able to see he would have made a better decision about what to choose from the fridge. In the same way, as the scriptures give ‘light to our eyes’ they enable us to see more clearly and discern more accurately.
The world that we live in, and the enemy that is against us, have a way of blinding us to the true character and nature of so many things (2 Corinthians 4:4). What might look appealing and helpful on the surface may actually turn out to be devastatingly harmful in reality. As the scriptures bring light to our understanding, we are protected from many of the hazards that might have tripped us up were we in darkness.
